EXERCISE 3

Read this brief description of city life in Copenhagen and its quarters, and answer the questions that follow.
Where to live in Copenhagen
For those who like large, well
organised life style,
Accommodation is cheaper in Copenhagen than in many other European capitals. Houses and apartments are spacious
and well equipped. However, the rental market is regulated
foreigners.
Furthermore, foreigners need several years of residency and official permission from the state before they can
purchase* property. Because of these restrictions many hotels provide apartments for a short or long terms, and many
companies have bought their own accommodation for

Public transport is well organized, with trains, buses and a new metro system, but it is not cheap. There are numerous
cycle paths and a system for renting bikes in one place and leaving them in another. For those who like healthy ou
door living there is a large choice of parks and recreational facilities within the city, as well as beaches and marinas all
within easy reach of the centre.
Lower rental and telecommunications costs, combined with a skilled work force, makes Copenhagen
for companies working in north European and Scandinavian markets. There are about 2,000 foreign companies,
employing about 60,000 expatriates*, and there is a useful network of support groups, clubs and relocation facilities,
as well as international schools teaching in English, German, French and Japanese. Useful websites are

residential quarter. The cost of living in this quarter is generally higher than in other parts of Copenhagen. There are
good bus and underground links to the rest of the city and the traffic and parking are not too bad. There are plenty of
supermarkets, cafes and shops, making it a pleasant place to live for rising professionals.
Indre Oesterbro (inner Oesterbro)
It’s situated between the centre and the north of Copenhagen, has become a popular place to live. There are several
green areas, such as Faelledparken, a large park hosting concerts and other happenings. However, parking is difficult,
and it is much easier to move around by bicycle or public transport (as do most inhabitants of Copenhagen). There are
also numerous supermarkets, restaurants and cafes.
Vesterbro
Vesterbro, in the western part of the city, has changed a great deal over the last ten years; it used to be a workingclass
quarter and renowned run-down* district 200 years of age, but it has now become one of the hippest** places to
live and go out. The city government gave them an overhaul*** and the social structure and organisation are
consequently much improved. Cafes, restaurants, bars and shops are popping up and there is a lively nightlife with
concerts, street theater, painters, and artisans selling handicrafts everywhere. The price of accommodation is rising
constantly but it is not an expensive area to live in; supermarkets for example have low prices. The main railway
station is on the border between Vesterbro and the city centre, making it easy to reach other parts of Copenhagen and
Denmark. Public transport is also efficient, although residents still prefer to move around by bicycle.

Ydre Oesterbro (outer Oesterbro)
Though workers or socially marginalized people live in some apartment blocks, outer Oesterbro this is the rich upperclass
quarter and the wealthy occupies most of it. The northern part of the district is made up of villas with gardens
and the prices to rent or buy a property are very high. Trains and buses cross the area, but services are not as frequent
as in the centre. It may be useful to have a car or bicycle here.

Ecologists think there are some steps that could 4. arrest this attrition. For example, in order to attack insect pests,
they can release some sexually sterile forms to prevent their reproduction. Farmers could plant and harvest at
strategic times and regulate irrigation too. In addition, to increase resource and energy recovery from solid wastes,
technology in this field must be developed. An example of this would be to separate inert or inorganic waste and put it
back into use .Moreover, intensive research efforts to use other sources of energy should be supported. It has been
discovered that solar cells convert the sun’s rays to electricity. And a plant photosynthesis may be used to produce
carbohydrates that could be fermented to provide substitutes for gasoline. Plant enzyme systems could also be used
as sources of energy and water because of their capacity to produce molecular hydrogen. Thus. all of these would help
